Christmas and A Happy New Year

Jessie jots...

Tonight, I'm sitting in front of the TV, watching commercials and tv shows that is constantly reminding me that the new year is quickly approaching. Christmas is coming up in 40 minutes time. And it is so funny just how fast a year has gone by because it didn't feel we had Christmas that long ago.

This year, although the Christmas tree is up, there's only two presents under the tree. One for me and one for Hushby - yes, it is a lonely Christmas for us but we are taking the down time to fully relax and restore our energy from what was lost during high pressure time.

This year, we won't be cooking a traditional Christmas meal but a Chinese steam boat because it's easier, comforting and will last a few meals a day. This year, there will be no traveling nor welcoming guests. Instead we'll be taking this down time for house viewing for our possible first home purchase.

This year also, as much as I regretted it, I didn't have the chance to send out Christmas cards like I used to. School projects really took too much of my time but it really isn't a good excuse. I will try harder next time.

Having said that, allow me to take this opportunity to wish everyone who reads this blog a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Take the Christmas time to appreciate your family and friends because as we all know, Christmas is nothing without them. Take this time to regenerate from the love you gather during Christmas. You need to have the confidence and the support to face what 2010 is going to bring us. Good luck, good health and good life for 2010.

An After-Finals Weekend Journal

Jessie jots...

Wow feels so weird to be on the couch doing nothing.... my mind has completely, officially shut off over the weekend. What a great way to reset.

Here’s how it began. WARNING - LONG POST AHEAD.

Well I started out with a visit to the chiropractor to realign all my stress-out back bone, the effect from being in front of the computer for 12 hours every single day. I almost died. Dr. Iris is ever so sweet, made me feel so welcome whenever I visit. She would hold my hand and stroke my skin as if I am such a poor little helpless thing. She's so motherly to me. After catching up from a 2 month hiatus on my part, the visit proceeded with an one hour massage with Susan. I love her. Dr. Iris and staff are my saviors; they never fail to make me feel better.

My mind completely shut off right after that. Hushby and I went to a French cafe for a relaxing lunch. For her, a shrimp and mushroom linguine and for him, baked ham on a crepe with some rich sauce poured over, I don't even know what. I was so in dazed from the massage, my detail-oriented, up tight self temporarily shut off.

After that, we drove to Laguna Beach to get something which is quite out of the norm for us because we don't usually go there except on school days or when people visit us. A couple of friends who had visited told us if they live here, they would just sun bath at Laguna Beach every single day. I don't do that... I guess when I have the luxury, I prefer to sit at home and read my magazines or cook up a meal. Guess I am just a homebody. But that Saturday was exceptional, I really didn't want to do anything... I didn't want to strain my eyes to look at fonts or Facebook. So being by the beach was really the ultimate escapade for me.

The view is breathtaking. The smell of seawater always make me feel at home. The sun was unusually bright that day considering it has been gloomy the entire week. I was at peace.

A few hours later, we went back home and I couldn't withstand the daze and confuse state of mind anymore... so I took a nap. A couple of hours nap later, Hushby served me some home cook food. Chicken and some veggie with rice, simple yet satisfying. It has been weeks and I certainly miss home cook food. After that, I had a long, fun chat with miss oysterspeak. We had so much catching up, albeit the frustration of experiencing culture shock with our own country - it certainly was a great way to find out that after all, I was not the only one! Don't worry oyster, it is only temporary.

Nothing feels better than catching up with an old buddy; it's always heartwarming. Later on, Hushby and I watch TV 'til the wee hours. It really is one of those nights that I let loose - completely! It was really fun - Saturday Night Live was on, I had a great laugh. Then it was time to sleep.

Sunday morning, we got up really late. Sleeping in on Sunday is has never felt so good! I don't usually like waking up late on Sunday because we had to catch the Farmers Market that closes at noon. I love to go there on Sunday morning, even when I hadn't had breakfast. The fresh fruits and vegetables are a spectacle on its own. Not only are they organically grown, but the taste and the texture on this fruits and vegetables are so flavorful. I can't explain how we love these fresh produce so much but definitely am very lucky we don't have to survive on frozen produce anymore.

We usually spent about $20 or less in the Farmer's Market. We love to stock up on lots of fruits and vegetables, just enough to last us a week. If I know I won't be cooking that much for the week, we usually go to Trader Joe's for some of the easy and quick meals that I can just heat up and eat. However, this time is really a time to re-nourish myself for all that extra energy burn up thinking, innovating and concentrating.

We had breakfast the Mollie's Kitchen at Aliso Viejo, just seconds away from the market. I opted for a heavy brunch, so a Green Huevos Rancheros, a mexican dish of stewed pork with green sauce spoon over a fried egg was served. DELISH. For him, a potato, sausage skillet - hearty and just manly. Haha. The tab came to about $25 including tips - not too bad. That last us the whole day.

We came home and organize our freshly bought produce into the refrigerator. I usually like to wash and dry them before organizing them into clear plastic bags or chopped them up for future use but I cut myself some slack this time. And also because just looking at our own pig sty, I can see it's screaming "CLEAN ME!" to its tenants. So I decided to reserve some energy for that spring cleaning. It was getting disgusting - cat fur is everywhere, stuck to the carpet like cob webs, dust gathering on the TV and laundry is stacking up slowly but ever so quickly when you don't take note. However, before anything should start, Hushby caught Pipi and decided to groom that ball of knots. She meowed and struggled each time being held, but usually, a few minutes later, she'd lay flat and lifeless for us to go through her fluffy body, looking for matted cat fur... some little ones but some as large as a golf ball. That poor thing must have been so uncomfortable. She has been trying to let us know by sleeping at weird places and weird positions and I just realized that. Of course during grooming time, cat fur is everywhere. So much fur had been taken off, I think I could make a blanket out of it. It's really a lot of maintenance to keep this kitty clean and fluffy but looking at her being comfortable and fluff up now is worth the time invested on grooming.

Of course, after a cat fur storm, vacuuming is much needed. While Hushby vacuum, I pick up garbage, recycle papers, wash table place mats and put things back to its places. The home immediately feels fresher the instance all other miscellaneous items are gone.

We took a break, deciding what type of cookies to bake. It has been a tradition to bake cookies every Christmas. It started when Joey was around and we love to bake and give out to people as gifts. She and I used to bake when Mom prepare for the Chinese New Year celebration. I guess we just love messing around with cake batters and kneading cookie dough but nobody ever admits that. Unfortunately, this time round, Joey is not with us and so Hushby and I only have ourselves to entertain with. Hence, I made Hushby bake with me - an extra pair of hands is always appreciated. He liked the idea of baking when I asked him to help but I don't know if he really mean that or he's just pleasing me? Hmm...

While the cookie dough needed to be refrigerated, we took out the seafood produce we bought at Henry's for marinating. The lobster was on sale for only $4 each tail while the two pieces of yellow fin tuna steaks was only for $5. It was a deal for us. Hushby had always wanted to create his own seafood platter at home, so this was his chance to show it off to me. haha We marinated the lobster tail with home-grown chopped parsley, chopped garlic and a splash of olive oil. For the tuna, I made a thyme and garlic infused olive oil and pour over the steaks with a squeeze of half a lemon juice, also home-grown. In addition to that, we bought two frozen crab cakes and I just pan fried them with a spray of non-stick canola oil and was done in 4 minutes. Easy breezy.

The marinating process didn't take long while I clean up all the mess mixing the cookie doughs. At dusk, Hushby started heating up the grill, and I took out all the seafood we marinated, PLUS two romaine lettuce chopped into half for grilling as well. I also baked three sweet potatoes, always an excellent choice of side for seafood (right?) with the microwave for only 11 minutes. When they were done, so was Hushby. That's only how long it took. The only mistake he did was not having the fire strong enough to get the grill marks on the steaks but who cares, they taste superb anyway!

The result was amazing! The marinate really comes through and our sour lemon juice really added a punch to these delicious, scrumptious seafood! The lobster meat was so juicy, as opposed to being over-grilled or over-boiled as the meat gets hard, which explains why I never like lobster until I had this one! And it was just plain sweet with that chopped parsley and fire-roasted garlic... OH! to die for! It was such a fun night, I'd do again in the near future if those lobster tails are going on sale again.

Dinner was just awesome. I licked up all that lobster juice and finish my starchy root just in time for cutting up the cookie doughs into square for baking. I washed the dishes and set the chopping board out. We baked the cookies in batches, two trays at a time. I think we made about a hundred cookies on this occasion - the biggest batch I had ever done. Half of the batch was the thumbprint tart-like cookies, some filled with apricot jam and some with strawberry jam. For other half of the batch, I made an orange glaze, flavored with orange zest as well the juice for the cooled cookies to be dunked in and covered on one side with the glaze goodies.

We let the cookies sat on the dining table for the glaze to firm and the tart cookies to cool off. Then we take our turns to shower AND to watch that no one attacks the cookies while we're gone. Luckily Pip was nice, she didn't care for any of them. When the cooled cookies were ready, we split them into two pretty boxes for the designated receivers. We only have a few for ourselves - which is the weird thing with me. I love to bake but I don't eat a lot of them. But if someone else bake, I tend to overeat. Haha!

When all is done, we clean up and was ready to doze off at midnight. The cat was all hyped up, ready to play because whenever we finally settle down on the couch, she thinks we are available to play. I pity her for the lack of attention she's been getting, so I pick myself up despite being tired. Using the cellphone charger as the bait, she chased from one corner of the apartment to another. I called it a night when she started panting - her stamina is running low since we've been busy. haha poor thing.

It was a great weekend... it's so nice to slow down and smell the roses. It is indeed refreshing.

Finish Finals

Jessie jots...

Don't worry, I'm still here. I did not fall of from the face of the earth and disappear. It has been a busy ride since I started school in August and I am now officially done with the first semester's FINALS!!!! WOO HOO!! Six classes... and I just found out I aced 5 of them. Giving myself a pat in the back now coz I really did work hard, extra hard if I may say but I cannot do it without the help and support from the Hub. He has been such a big help since I've always been on the go every minute. He does it all for me without leaving me to worry about anything except food. He gets up earlier than me, shower and prepare breakfast. Sometimes he even knocks while I'm showering and ask how I like my eggs done, "Dear? Half boil or sunny side ups?" And at night, he pours me glasses of water while I work on my project. When my arms get tired, he gives me a quick session of massage. And when I had to cut any printed papers, he prints it out for me and automatically take the scissors and cut them. Not forgetting that he also does my laundry, groceries and dishes. Or even bring me shopping when I need an extra sweater. All I had to worry is completing my project in time and finish it flawlessly. I don't know what did I do to deserve Hushby but for sure, now I am fully aware that I am very, very lucky.

I have about 3 weeks of holiday before next semester starts in January 19. Today will be the first day I am going to 'veg out' and play Super Mario until I puke. Then only I will plan a day to clean up my mold-infested toilet and take over the laundry myself. That's the start. I'm also thinking I might have to bake some cookies for the people who thought about us, namely my chiropractor. She and her staff has always given me freebies and has done so much for me without extra charges sometimes - again I'm so lucky. So I thought the cookies are going to be just a perfect way of showing some appreciation to them.

But for now - allow me to go on a snooze and I might decide to doze off but I don't know... that's the beauty of Fridays isn't it? Unplanned, easy and laid back. Have a great weekend.

Library

Jessie jots...

Another perspective homework handed in! Wooo hoooo..... It took me two weeks, TWO WEEK! of hard work and bending over constantly, measuring... with a T-square ruler and a long ruler for the two-point perspective drawing. If you can tell, the two points are located outside of the drawing paper, on the board. We need the board to draw because using the points, we can measure the angle of the line for object we're drawing.

When the class was given the project of 2 point perspective, the parameter includes exterior AND interior illustration as well. My mind went blank, I had no clue where to start. All I could think of and my only inspiration is to draw that Olive Spa I did two years ago... maybe bump it up a little more now that perspective knowledge is in my head. But that would be redundant and I would pretty much draw the same thing. But because that was a see through building as well, I knew I wanted to do another building that's invisible, maybe bigger... with stairs, bookshelves, and elevators... a library!

I drew a couple of thumbnails for myself and the instructor came to look. One of them struck his eye, which is a 5-tiered building, that almost resembles a wedding cake and he said he loved it. It was my least favorite, but he told me one of the tallest building is built this way too, one block stack on top of the other. Simple as that... true enough, I searched online and it IS one of the tallest building in Taipei!

Suffice to say, the complicated self me was convinced that it is going to be a good drawing -because it is simple and it looked like a cake - my instructor said, there can be potential. As soon as I started the first layer, after laying out the foundation of the 3-dimensional blocks, then only it started to grow on me.

Second layer, I lay out all the stairs, making sense where it goes and where it end up on each floor. I had to make sure of where the stairs begin and end in order to find ways to facilitate the bookshelves, chairs, table and lighting.

Then the third layer consist of putting it all down - the grand slam. The doors, the elliptical chairs, the sidewalks, the tiny books - man, they take forever to draw!

Scanned version

And finally, here's the red carpet moment - all proper and ready. The fourth layer is to transfer all finalize drawing on a vellum sheet. Still, the pencil markings smudges and I can't do much about it coz as human, I perspire... especially standing long hours for this project.

And here's the scoop, I'll be using the same drawing for my Photoshop class in its final project. I will be coloring it using photoshop and possibly, may be adding some figures into the drawing to show interactions in it. If that's not possible, I might just get the building colorized and create an architectural presentation as if launching a new building, promoting its glory to the community. I'm being ambitious again but hopefully it will turn out alright - and I only have less than a week to do that! Help!

If there's anything that will break my spine, it is this project! Me and my ever ambitious mind always tend to over-complicate any given project. I went to class to find everybody else's was simple, clean and stunning. Why can't I just be like that? But great news is, tons of people have complimented on this work. The pinnacle of it all is when my ever-so-impress instructor took this work with him and show it to the school's president. The word "CRAZY!" was blurted out (don't worry, I take that positively), and the president said he was impress that the student is in this college.

And this student also happened to be the girl who walked into the office, looking for her advisor, who had asked him "Are you Dan Jensen?" not realizing she just spoke to the low-key President who also did not introduce himself after being mistakenly addressed. Ah embarrassment.

Behind the scene:

In the midst of taking photos of my work, the feline needs attention as well. She is never away when I am taking pictures of something... always nearby and some times I think she knows where I point and shoot too coz she's always there!

What a busy body. If anyone ever notice, Pipi always like to block one's view. If I were on the laptop, she'll sit on my keyboard.... or in this case, she would stand in front of the drawing preventing from taking pictures. Well apparently, she argues, she likes to check out my work too. It's so annoying when she does that because I had to carry her away from my view, go back to my spot and she's back again in action in like 2 seconds. Then, after several times of doing so, I would lock myself in the room and cry "LEAVE ME ALONE" but Pip does not resist. She scratch on the door and beg with her meows "LET ME IN". At which point in time, I'll be done taking photos of my work and she comes in, sit there and just look at me. GRRRRR

Self-Portrait

Jessie jots...

haha OMG posting this up is so embarrassing but Hushby insist I should. I really don't like looking at myself, feel so vain every time I had to do a self-portrait. And when I did this two years ago, I had no prior experience drawing figures nor myself. I hadn't drawn since high school, actually my experience is measly, nobody even knew I can draw. That's how exposed to art I was.

Anyway, just for comparison sake, here's a self-portrait I did two years ago, in a tight-space apartment and using charcoal carelessly and not knowing how it will even turn out.

Self-portrait with Charcoal, September 2007

2 years later, here's also using charcoal but in a subtractive manner, which means all surface of the paper is covered with charcoal and then a kneaded eraser is used to carefully take out where features are highlighted.

Self-portrait 3-quarter view with vine charcoal (6 hours)

Because we were experimenting with different mediums, last one made use of graphite, fancy word for pencil. Over here, I used a 4B pencil, shading all areas of my face by looking at lines and wherever it cast shadows.

Self-portrait with a 4B graphite, October 2009 (8 hours)

If there's anything I learn, is to be comfortable in your own skin. The last one was probably the best of me because I was just that. Doesn't matter how rounder my face is, or how much my lips beginning to look more and more like Dad's... it all boils down to, this is what you're born with, make good use of it.

Baby Amber makes Jessie, her Auntie

Jessie jots...

As cold and as busy as it gets this week, the news of a baby born pauses all that is happening around me this week. My tiny niece at four and half pounds, baby Amber Choo is born last Monday, November 30th. The delivery was rather sudden, none of my family member was prepared due to some medical circumstances but both mommy and baby is doing fine, now back at home recuperating.

What a joyous occasion welcoming a new baby into the family. It still feels weird to me granted the distance and not really seeing it all happening physically... maybe it will start to hit me when I meet the little one. Gosh, I am feeling a little older already coz I am an aunt now! haha

I may be biased but I'm already loving what I'm seeing through the pictures. She's too cute for words... :D

Welcome to the world baby Amber! :)

The Miracle Egg

Jessie jots...

On class work of a little shiny egg that produces a glowy miracle light. Nothing much, just a short clip... wish I had time to animate some more but lack of time.
