The Food Paradise - Malacca & Taiping

Jessie jots...

Continuation from The Food Paradise - Penang post

As pinky promised, here's some of food pictures to satisfy all your hungry eyes. Not many sorry, since I didn't spend many days at these places.

Before I continue on, I attached a link to a picture of the Peninsular Malaysia map for those of you who are not familiar with the location of the places I went. Visit here to see Penang northwest of Malaysia. Just right below Penang is Taiping, located in the state of Perak. Then further south, is Malacca/Melaka situated right below the capital city Kuala Lumpur on located in the west coast of the Peninsular Malaysia.

Malacca

One thing about Malacca that everyone should know is that Malacca is a place rich in culture and it is one of the oldest township in Malaysia that provides much history to how Malaya was formed back in the late 14th to 15th century. Malacca has just celebrated their one year anniversary after receiving the World Heritage Site Award before Penang was also awarded for maintaining their old architectures on site. In Malacca is where you find more direct descendants of Baba Nyonya who are descendants of the Indonesian Chinese interracial marriage, also sometimes termed as the Peranakan Chinese. They form a sub-group of the Chinese community mostly Hokkien and resides in the West coast of Malaysia, combining traits from both ethnic groups into their lifestyle.

One of the best known local tidbits is their Pineapple Tarts, sometimes call biscuits cause' they come in many form. Some are wrapped up like a bolster or Pig in the Blanket, as what Westerners like to call them. Some are made like tarts, with pineapple fillings in the middle, surrounded by crisps, buttery crust all over. Below is some of the freshest made, just came off from the oven. Pineapple Tarts are simply scrumptuous!

The greener ones are made with screwpine (pandan) leaves, so it gives a more aromatic scent than the regular yellow ones. I still prefer the original Pineapple Tarts.

My mom and I dived straight into hunting for the best Pineapple Tart in town, trying every sample each shop has to offer. Was it a hard decision? Heck yes, I couldn't imagine anyone has to be a judge to find out who does it best. In the end, we bought about 10 boxes from a random fellow because it was getting late, and we didn't have enough time to decide somemore. So much for hunting. :P
One box as below, cost us about eleven ringgit each. And then we bought 5 more boxes the next morning from another vendor. I only took one back for YW and it's still at my kitchen counter sitting there... looking delicious. BRB I'm gonna grab one.
*Crumbs all over*
I didn't try the Radish Cake but I reckon, it'd be as delicious as the ones I tried in Penang. They are made of radishes, duh... mixed with rice flour, steamed until they harden. Then they are cut up into pieces like below and stir fry them with soy sauce, salted vegetables, eggs and bean sprouts. See the prices? Small packet is RM2.50 and big packet is I think 3.50, can't see... it's blocked. With egg, small packet is RM3.00. So inexpensive!

Some of you probably know the deal with Jonker Street in Malacca. It's one of the most happening bazaar in Malacca. If you're there in the weekends, there's no way you'll miss it. Along the street, we found a hawker noodle stall. The sauce that is over the noodle is called Kapitan Curry, made with lots of ground turmeric and turmeric leaves. So it gives out a very fragrant smell which I absolutely love, love, love. I never know how to make this, I usually cook this dish out of storebought instant packet, add my own coconut milk and some chicken, which is not even nearly as good as this original, made with love kinda Kapitan Curry. Delicioso!

Unlike the Westerners, Asian find much fondness in eating gross, ugly looking, strong smell snacks in between meals. When other looks for Oreos or Frito-Lays for afternoon snacks, we look for dried grilled squid, or dried little baby crabs that is crisp and crunch when you bite. Here you can see the older lady grilling the baby crabs, seasoned with hot paste and salt. Taste great with beer!

This man is selling dried noodles, he probably made himself. I don't know... it's not all that impressive, but I felt it was necessary to show many of you that we don't frequent the supermarket to buy noodles. We go to this specialty stalls because they taste more like how we like them - original, tasty and springy.
And that brown thing in the middle, all plastic bagged up is the famous Gula Melaka aka Palm Sugar. Malacca is very well known for their Palm Sugar as they are found to be very original, such that it is not mix with regular brown sugar or flour. Palm Sugar is quite difficult to process - it's labor intensive to extract the juice out of the palm trees, cook the juice over hot fire and hot stove for a small quantity of the sugar and it takes a long time to wait for it to harden up and slice them to pieces for packaging. The ones found in our regular supermarket which are usually lighter brown are not true to taste. The real ones are actually quite dark in brown color and has a very distinctive fragrant flavor.

In Malacca, you cannot miss the chance to dine at a true Nyonya house home cook meal. Nyonya restaurants are everywhere, anyway. They are not that inexpensive, I wouldn't consider but if you're paying cheap prices for Nyonya food, they probably aren't that real. Here we have, from left, Sambal Petai with Shrimp and raw cucumbers, the dried up bowl is actually Kiam Chai Ark Tng (Sour Vegetable Soup with Duck Meat), Gulai Ikan (Sour Curry Fish), Ayam Pong Teh (Chicken cooked with, I'm guessing, five spice powder, soy sauce and potatoes) and Sambal Kacang Botol (Winged Beans with Sambal).
There were actually 3 more dishes after this picture was taken and as far as I can remember, one of them was Curry Chicken with Bitter Nuts that was black in color, as well as some desserts using the melted Palm Sugar, poured over shaved ice and home made cendols, a dish also called as Cendol or Ais Kacang (Ice with Nuts and Cendol)

For dinner, it's almost mandatory that one should have Chicken Rice Ball meal with roasted chicken or steamed chicken. Either one is good. The special part is having that darn round rice balls, it's so good and it's so filling. One or two of it and you're done. They are probably cooked in chicken broth and round them up with hand and recook them until it hardens to this shape. I may be wrong but I guess, it's probably hard to make them since they should be shaped while warm.

We ordered Ais Kacang/Cendol again because it was just so good!! The palm sugar as you can see, it's poured over the ice and it creates that wonderful in-depth sweetness taste when the ice melt in your mouth. The green thing is cendol, made with flour and screwpine leaves (pandan) and some red beans to complete the dessert.

That's basically it for Malacca. I wish I took more pictures of the other food we had but you know me, lack of willpower, lack of discipline. :P My apologies to the viewers.
Taiping
Next up, Taiping! The town I grew up in for about 3 years and where I married Hushby and where's Hushby is from. It's about one hour drive south of Bukit Mertajam, as you can probably tell from the map. Taiping is also one of the oldest town formed in the late 1800s when it was built due to greed for money and power as the area was filled with riches of timber and tin. At that time, Chinese immigrants were brought to Taiping to mine for tins. Even my descendants, panned for tins. Ironically, today, Taiping is a humble little peaceful town where neighbors are your friends and your relatives. Old market place are a hangout spot to most residents where they sit there to gamble what time the rain will fall. Being known as a rainy town, Taiping is also known for being a retirement place because it is peaceful, clean and less crowded.
Fortunately and unfortunately, I had the leisure to dine at some of the more elegant places in Taiping because I was a guest and guest has to be treated with nice, elegant dinners, no? Unfortunately to me, I didn't have a lot of time to wander around to satisfy the foodie palette in me. Fortunately for me, I didn't have to sacrifice my waistline!
The elegant Chinese dinner one can have is typically like the following. It's almost like a Chinese wedding occasion but not quite as it doesn't have the traditional 'luck' dishes. From top left is Choy Tam (Steamed Baby Kai Lan with Fried Onions), right to that is Broccoli with Mushroom, poured with Abalone sauce, Steamed Siakap (Grouper) with restaurant's special sauce, Claypot Tofu with Straw Mushrooms and Vegetables, and lastly, Roasted Duck served with raw Cucumbers. Yum-O!

Below is a must have if you're in Taiping for the day. Hushby and I are never ever going to be done being HEAD over HEELS for these Banana Leaf Rice. It's an Indian cuisine, usually for vegetarians but you can have them with meat too. I especially love the mutton curry. I mean, this Indian guy, who has probably been there for decades, cook this mutton curry like no other. I cannot find any substitution ever for this mutton curry. It's amazingly delicious.
So before you start, you have to wash your hands cause' you ain't gonna get fork and spoon here. You will have to scoop your rice with your hand. They servers will place the Banana Leaf in front of you and then pour a lot of rice on it. You have to tell them to stop or they will not because Indians eat bountiful of rice. Then they will serve you the side dishes, individually. Usually, there's cabbage in turmeric sauce, as seen on far left, Potatoes/Pumpkin minced in curry sauce, some Papadum (chips) and fried eggs with onions. On top of the rice is the curry of your choice. This is my sister's curry - her choice was Chicken. When you're done with your food, make sure to fold the leave towards your body to show that you will return and the meal was delicious. Not to forget, also drink a small shot of Rasam (a very sour soup) to wash down all that fullness and heat.

In fact, Taiping is well-known for a lot of food, too many to mention, too little time for me to eat them as well. Yes, you can also grow fat in a small town like Taiping. One of the food that will make you pack on the pounds is this. Roasted Pork! Located next to the market is this succulent, tender, well-roasted pork. Small amount like this can cost up to RM15.00, depending on the parts you get as well. I'm not a big meat lover, but I'll dive into this anytime.

So that's all for now at the moment. I'm itching to stop now cause' it's time for tennis! WOO HOO... enjoy the pics, enjoy imagine eating them and I shall soon post pictures of KL food. Cheerios!

A Few News

Jessie jots...

I'm suppose to update more food pictures of Taiping, Malacca and KL but... honestly speaking, I'm quite lazy to upload pictures here on blogspot.com nowadays. There has been too many error messages and down time moments, I am giving up... this week only. No fret.

Anyway, I'd just like to update you all on what's new with me. Little did I realized, I did so much since I came back to Cali... and it was only 3 weeks. So what happened?
  • I picked up tennis after discovering we have a tennis court here in the compound. I wanted to learn tennis since little, so it was a dream come true to play with the champ himself. Poor Hushby was steer left and right for my aimless returns. It was so much fun though, I couldn't even be bothered with the blister. Can't wait to do it again!

  • Since I got back, my jeans and tops doesn't look that snug anymore. I think it's a combination of more walking and less carbs that helps with the losing weight process. Before that, nothing fits and you know why. LOL
  • Started meditation, practised for 30 mins about two to three times a week. It had help with my back pain and migrane tremendously.
  • Been juicing a lot too lately. Juice of the week, papaya with soymilk. So delish! Another is celery with apple. Just refreshing! It's said to help with lower down cholesterol and high blood pressure. My folks are doing it and it seems to work. I just drink it coz I love the taste. :) And a good way to use up my celery bunch too. Hehe

  • After all that whining to part ways with Window, I've finally converted to a Mac... yup, now I see why all the madness with Mac items and the wonders of what it can do. So now I'm all prepped with Mac's gear, and a free iPod touch, the reason? For back-to-school occasion this August 31st. Just missing a laptop bag, otherwise, I'm all good to go.
  • After a few occasion at theme parks since last year, I'm now proud to say, I've conquered and overcome my fear of heights! I have learned to go on rides that I used to be scared of and I've been on ferris wheel for the umpteenth time now and have learned to find joy in letting loose. Yey... *Pat myself in the back* That's me and sweet sixteen year-old Ashley on the way to Journey to Atlantis ride at Seaworld. The ride may not look like a big deal to you, but with that biggest dip, my soul actually left my body and still lingers on top of that tower. Still, it was awesome!

  • Just got back from another vacation. I've been down with the travel bug. I was invited by our guests from Vancouver to visit San Diego with them... and also to help them navigate. How can I forgo the opportunity to stay in the regal Sheraton Suite Hotel and see Shamu the killer whale perform at Seaworld? Quite tiring actually to have been out and about after a series of jetlag week. Nevertheless, it was fun despite being burn... a punishment for forgetting my SPF protection. See the mark on my chest?

  • Been shopping a bit too much lately. Actually, the Thamsters were to blame. I was just accompanying them, bringing them to a few my favorite places to shop but I ended up carrying more paperbags than they did, mom and daughter combined. With so many summer sales going on, I can't help it! At first, I started buying lots of basics, which I realized, I don't have that many to build my blocks with. So I got the black and grey tops, the nude sandals, the basic bra colors. I comfort myself, they will last for a long time. Then because I was bored waiting for the Thams at the changing room, I browse somemore and ended up with more paperbags. Yup, I bought more, adding to my collection is a bunch of crazy weird colors like coral/peach tops, bright green skirt, bright orange pants, neon yellow bra... I know, the latter wasn't that necessary but its pretty.

  • Because of that reason, I enjoy dressing up lately. Summer this year is very forgiving to us fashion lovers who love layering... windy days can be cooling, though the sun is warm to the skin. Another great way to protect the skin and still look good, right? Forgive the photographer for the last pic, he was probably shivering.

  • I'm so excited to learn a few friends are coming to visit. A few from the group is Vanessa who has finally made plans to visit me this Thanksgiving, I'm so excited!! And Jane, where are you? I don't know but anytime you're in the US territory, I'm all ready to give you the biggest CNY feast eva! Oh and Thanksgiving bird feast for you too Vanessa. :)

  • I'm getting all psych up for the upcoming orientation this Wednesday. And there's a welcoming party (I can't believe the college make us go for a party) this Thursday night. I don't know what to wear and I don't know how to react to kids who are going to be at least 5 to 10 years younger than me. God I feel so old... however it is, I will remain calm and quiet... until someone approaches me and then I will speak. Yes, I'm a dork like that.

Wish me luck that I won't be getting stares from young hippy Mac babies who might think I belong to their mom's generation. And that I will excel in future classes... And do well interacting with my future classmates and find opportunities to create beautiful things others will appreciate. Sigh... I'm such a worry wart.

I will find time to upload the food pics tomorrow. Pinky promise!

The Food Paradise - Penang

Jessie jots...

Warning, excessive salivation may occur ahead. Read with caution.

Someone told me I should put up pictures of food I had back home and here it is! I have too many food pictures on file... I had to pick and choose. I had to also divide the food pictures into categories as to where I found them, which I think will make better statements and it'll bring them justice why they are so special... at least to me. First post here is all about food from Penang... purely from the Pearl of Orient also known as the Food Paradise of Malaysia.

By the way I'm lucky to be born in the Penang, even more lucky to be born in a family who enjoys food and knows where to find good food. But warning though, staying with my family can result in the expansion of your waistline. Actually, its the same goes with any other family in Penang cos all of their favorite thing to do is EAT, EAT, EAT!

Wedding food
Here's some typical wedding food of a quite traditional wedding dinner.

First dish is always the sampler of appetizer. From the yellow thing to the right, you have the otak-otak (baked fish with coconut milk and turmeric), baked herb chicken in individual foil wrappers, stir-fry mixed veggies, restaurant's homemade tofu and in the middle, egg stir fry with shark fin and mushroom.

Shark fin soup (plus abalone, sea cucumber and eggs), a few dash of black vinegar

Two flavors of chicken - left is the roasted and right is the fried one with sweet and sour sauce. The pink thing is prawn crackers.

And there's actually 5 more dishes after this dish but I lost track as I was busy yakking with other people. My bad! Not a good note taker, as you can tell!

Balik Pulau - Fruit Hunt
We round the island one day and spontaneously wanted to do a fruit hunt. So here goes,
Dad shopping for the King of Fruit - Durian! I sorta learn how to pick one but Dad knows best. I've only recently acquired the taste of durian and start appreciating like any other Penangites. I tried with the sweet ones first but when Mom persuade me to try her favorites, the more bitter ones, I'm surprise I kinda like it.

Contrasting taste - The upper one is sweet, typically white ones are sweeter, so nothing special about it but the bottom orangey color durian is quite something. The name? "Ang He" (Red Prawn), somewhat a special breed they made into getting that taste of a durian. It got its name due to its color and taste, also as it come in the shape of a prawn. 'Ang He' is no doubt a bit more expensive than any regular durians that can cost as low as RM1, but this one was about RM40 ($11 per durian) for one fruit. The first taste of Ang He almost threw me off my seat, it almost made me sneeze. It was too bitter. But from then on, I know what its like to enjoy the bitterness taste, it is really unique.
Just to throw it out there, as the famous Chinese saying goes: if you can't eat bitter food, you cannot tolerate your life's hardship. :) You have to taste bitterness first before you taste the sweetness in life.
Hakka Food
I have many Hakka friends in town but have never heard of Hakka restaurant in Penang until recently. A friend told me of this restaurant located near Sawtow Lane, you locals should know and my mom and I went there for a try. The food is as interesting as the Hakka people. Hakka is one of the dialects/sub-group people found in the Chinese community. Their way of living, their beliefs in religion and their dialects is somewhat different... so is the other sub-group of Chinese people but I find them more interesting because its rarely been learn of their tradition, the beliefs system and especially, their cuisine. Nowadays, it is quite difficult to find people who knows how to cook Hakka food as Hakkas seem to lose their originality and heritage as Penang modernize in the recent years.
So I'm quite lucky here... to be able to sit down and be served food that was almost extinct. Upper left is the stir-fry glutinous rice balls pre-mixed with yam. The sauce is a mixture of mushroom, chinese celery and lots of soy sauce. The lower right is a plate of plain rice, mixed in with the herbal tea (includes basil, mint, etc) as well as steamed veggies such as cabbage, spinach, and some peanuts. It was simply delicious!
Mom-in-law's visit to Bukit Mertajam
Though you will not actually see my MIL in action here, I'm categorizing it this way so that none of you think that we all feast like this everyday! Dad being the hospitable (not to mention, foodie) person that he is, couldn't resist bringing us to a few places that he deemed special and extraordinary, all for the gesture to welcome my MIL's stay in Bukit Mertajam. And boy, did we all like it! So did MIL. Thanks Dad :)
Yeh-May (Exotic meat) Restaurant in Jawi. From upper left to right: Deer meat, shark and sting ray in curry, spinach. Lower left to right: Wild boar, fried pig's foot and steamed clams.
At another occasion, we brought MIL to an authentic Thai restaurant, which has a very pleasant atmosphere with your own little hut that you get to sit in and enjoy your food privately without the chatter noise of other diners.

Raw shrimps salad, served with shredded cabbage and raw bittergourd, drizzled with lime juice, garlic and lots of chillies! YUM-O!!! I think I had it like three times in one week... simply love it!
This is the horseshoe crab's egg/roe salad, mixed with unripe mango, chilli, dried shrimps and onions. Too much of the eggs actually make you feel a lil woosy, which is funny... I don't think they stuffed the crabs with alcohol. Could be just the nature of the egg's chemical. I don't know!
Left, steamed mantis prawn with really, really sour sauce. Right is calamari/squid stir fry with spicy sweet and sour sauce, mixed with salted egg yolk. Omigod, has to be my ultimate favorite. You wouldn't believe the taste... indescribable!
And that's how hypnotize by food I've been, wore the wrong pair of slippers to the restaurant.

Out and About, All Hawker Street Food
Yup, we were all out and about. Hushby had his share, was he satisfied man! We were starved for too long... from home comfort food that is!
Here are all the little knick-knacks people use for praying as offerings, or even just have it for breakfast or at tea time. These are call 'kuih' in Chinese and Malay, and here is just a small fraction of it unfortunately. I wish had more pictures but before I knew it, they were already in my tummy. Sorry!
The pink cupcakes on the left is made of rice flour. Its sweet and fluffy... so is the white bigger cupcakes. Right to that, the brown curry puffs are usually stuffed with curried potatoes and chicken and then fried to golden brown. Above the curry puffs are the 'ki-chang', also known as the sweet dumplings, which you dipped with 'gula melaka', dark brown aromatic palm sugar. I was lucky to be home around the dumpling festivals, so of course, I make a point to have them as much as I possibly can.

Nearby the kuih stalls, is the famous BM's wonton mee stall. The couple has been selling wonton noodles for as long as I can remember... ever since I was little, Dad would buy one for me for breakfast. Mom would feed me this when I went to the market with her... we wouldn't miss it. It may not seem like a tradition at first but now, with the not-so-new addition to our family, Hushby always make sure he has a bowl of this noodle before anything else. He has already make it seem like a tradition we must carry on until the next new addition. It's not only tasty, its addictive. Why? Coz it has pork fat all over the noodles but who cares in this case, right? And not forgetting the yummiest part, the roasted pork and the wonton! By the way, they are all home-made and the seller speaks english. LOL

In Penang, we usually like to stop by at the Padang Tembak/Tembok, somewhere around Dato' Keramat where now the new Penang Time Square is. Located at one side of the soccer field is actually a row of hawker street food, quite hidden behind the big trees, but food can never hide from me! haha! It's a well-known place since I was a little girl. Folks there are old as my Grandpa would be... and their food, is without a doubt, the most authentic ones you can find. Here's the famous Yong Tau Fo, usually come with your own choice of fish balls, and veggies and sea weed (the black thing) cooked in their special chicken broth.

I ordered this but someone else had it. The curry mee with half-cooked bloody crockles... yummy!

And Penang's most iconic food of all... the Char Koay Teow (stir-fried flat rice noodle) cooked and covered with glorious pork fat, and more bloody crockles as well as fried eggs. OMG

We actually had more food than this but I dived in before I manage to snap. Sorry, I was overwhelmed by the smell and sight of these food... I apologize for the lack of willpower. And as a result, here's one of the not-so good shots of Laksa (rice noodles with fish and prawn broth) mixed with raw mint leaves, cucumber and chillies! The smell was to die for... though claimed by many Westerners, Laksa stinks. :)

Dessert anyone? I absolutely love a good bowl of cooling dessert in warm weather place like Malaysia... they are simply pleasing and satisfying. This one is call See Koay T'ng, which I'm not sure how to translate from Chinese to English, anyone can help? It's actually a mixture of many, many type of food... such as white fungus (believe to be good for cleansing blood), lychee, tapioca pearls (cool your body temperature), one quail egg (nourishing to your blood), lotus nuts, jelly, yam or sweet potatoes and many others, swimming in the sweet, in-depth taste of longan soup. All this for only RM2.50 (less than a dollar). OMG

And look at us going below. My goodness... one of the best dinner I ever had with my friends. Thanks to Su Ying's colleague recommendation, we tried this authentic Malay food, located in Bandar Perda near to the new Jusco. The set of dinner include one plate of rice, one curry with a few okra/ladyfingers, a fried fish drizzled with sweet thick black soy sauce, some raw veggies and cucumber served with Malay super duper good sambal! OMG
Look at us going... look at the stacked plate beside us. OMG We actually ordered more than one serving each. All of these, for 4 person... the grand total came to only RM40!! Equal to one of that 'Ang He' up there. OMG
Next, wait for my next update on Taiping, KL and Malacca! You sure don't want to miss it. HAHA

I HAF TO

Jessie jots...

Gosh, something's stinking isn't it? Is it the... ew!

Things is quickly slowing down. I'm not getting bored just yet though part of me still crave for Mom&Dad's attention. So I was suppose to get up early and start doing laundry that was put away a week ago but I just can't.

However, I'm all determine to get it done pretty soon (I hope!) but my very tired body is getting the best of me. I salute with admiration to you air stewardess and air steward and you handsome pilots! I wonder how you guys manage it and stay so good looking? I've succumbed to sleepiness during the day for almost a week when it should have been overcome by now. I'm so, so so sosososoooooo sleepy even while typing this... that I could just walk to that couch and raise a white flag to my inviting pillows.

Oh no, I'm not letting you win this time. Yes you're white, clean and fluffy... and soft, and cuddly BUT NOPE! You quit persuading me coz' I ain't going to fall in the trap... again!

On the other hand, you laundry baskets, I know you guys stink but hang in there. As soon as is it possible... I will... walk you... down the stairs... and go to the.... laundry room... before I...

Zzzzzzzz

Glad to be back

Jessie jots...
My skin is so harshly dry right now, no lotion or body oil could ever moisturize me! I've been pampered with simple hygiene care while in Malaysia, where the humidity had kept my skin moist. Now not only am I combating jet lag but I'm also struggling to NOT scratch my itchy body parts that only flakes like dandruffs when I did. Ew.

I arrived at LAX at 2.30pm on August 4th (Tuesday). I got out of the airport in such a jiffy, I couldn't believe it myself. Sometimes praying to God really helps! When I was last told in June by the lady officer of the US Embassy, that my out of status case was flagged down to be "reconsidered" once reaching the border of the country, I knew waiting in the line for hours was going to happen. I ain't gonna lie that I was nervous but I stayed firm and confident as I have nothing to lie.

To my disbelief, the male officer only asked one question, and before I knew it, I was off to collect my two luggages and out of the airport in 20 minutes... just in time to avoid the massive traffic jam that religiously takes place after 4pm.

Rewind 20 hours back, I checked into Penang airport with my parents and sisters at seven in the morning, expecting my in-laws also in attendance, who came as soon as I got my boarding pass from the Cathay Pacific airlines counter that morning. After learning that my flight was going to take off 15 mins sooner than was actually stated in the itineary, I rushed to say goodbyes. Then a couple of friends showed up, to my surprise. I was shocked as hell to see them, namely Kok Khai who just refused to see me the night before I left. I thought, why in the world he wanted to do that to his best friend? Only to see him walked to me and send me off with teary eyes. That devil!

We were all teary eye when we bid farewell. I was so, so touch with the people who showed up that early in the morning. Not forgetting, Jane who showed up the night before with James and her adorable Max after an unexpected departure from Abu Dhabi. Boy I was glad to see both of them before I leave - such a nice recap of my visit to Malaysia, seeing friends and keeping in touch with them.

Honestly, I hate saying goodbyes. I couldn't stand the sight of looking at my own friends and family weeping and I knew I had to walk away from them as soon as possible before I start to lose it myself. I have a long journey ahead and I have obligations to fill. So I hugged everyone quickly and said my goodbyes.

I did it so fast, I couldn't remember if I did hug everybody. I remember just glancing through, looking at faces really quick and walked into the departure hall wiping my tears away. By the time I sat down in the airplane heading to Hong Kong, all I could think about in the whole four hours flight was, did I hug Sandi? Did I say goodbye to Dad? If I didn't, I hope they'd understand that I meant well. I tried refocus my thoughts to happier ones, like all the fun events I shared with all my friends - the fried fish dinner at Bandar Perda, the car rides to Thai food with Kok Khai and Su Ying, the facial talk with Sandi, the joke my Dad made and the laughter my sisters and I shared. The memories of them talking crack me up every time! Even by myself... and no, nobody saw me smirking.

So here I am, in the arms of Hushby and Pipi again. Hushby is now as happy as a clam and couldn't get his eyes off from me. And Pipi, came to me straight from her afternoon sleep, start smelling me and even let me stroke her, in which if I was stranger, she would have ran across the room and hide. She immediately picked up where I left - she continue to play hide and seek with me, she obey my command when I tell her NO and she even knew the time to wake me up when I overslept yesterday morning.

Today she didn't have to wake me up. I was wide awake at 5.20 in the morning. Now at 10.30am, I'm feeling a little drowsy and I might just have to take a nap as my body is telling me, it's suppose to be 2.30am in Malaysia. It will take me a week to adjust. Just enough time for me recuperate before my in-laws from Vancouver is visiting next week.

I'm glad to be back. Even glad-er to back in my routine.

Am leaving in 6 hours time. Time flies, I know. I'm getting a lil antsy and I hope the flight will be pleasant. Before I leave, I'm quite desperate to take it all in before I forget how it used to look like. So allow me to take breathe in all that humid air, the smell of my home, the taste of the water, the look of my cat and some recollection of the reunions with people I treasure... then only I will be ready to walk down that departure hall and bid farewell with a group of teary eye families. I will miss this place dearly but I have to go back, my husband is awaiting. So is California.

Thanks for making my vacation a memorable one. I will miss you all dearly.

Goodbye.
